Fly Light Installation and Maintenance
What are Fly Lights?
Fly lights use fluourescent light to attract flies and other small flying insects using specific wavelenghts of light. They can be mounted to walls or hung from ceiling beams. These types of insect control devices are used mainly in commercial applications such as restaurants, hotels, motels and other entertainment venues.
There are 2 types of fly lights: Glueboard capture systems and electrical elimination units or bug zappers. Specific wavelengths emitted from the bulb attract small flying insects where they are trapped using a glueboard or instantly eliminated with electricity.
Eachtype of trap has it's own set of pro's and cons and each each is designed for use in different situations.
Glueboard Fly Lights
Fly ights that utilize glue boards operate in a more passive manner than the traditional "bug zappers". They can be used just about anywhere as they are unobtrusive and silent when in operation. This is the type of unit that is best utilized in restaurants, motels, hotels and other commercial enterprises where customer satisfaction is important.
Insects are attracted to the unique wavelength of the light and fly into the trap. A sticky glueboard is mounted near the fluourescent tube and as insects fly near the bulbs, they invariably run into the glueboard and are stuck.
After 30 days, the glueboard is removed and replaced with a fresh one. We would perform this service 1 time per month as well as replace any burned out tubes.
Electric Fly Lights (Bug Zappers)
These types of fly lights are known more commonly as "bug zappers". Insects are attracted to the flourescent bulb(s) and are electrocuted when they touch the electrified metal grid inside the trap. These type of bug lights are an effective way to kill annoying flying insects but are not for use in all situations.
When an insect touches the electrified grid, it quite literally explodes. That is a problem if these fly lights are placed anywhere near food. Who wants exploded bug parts in their potato salad? These types of fly light are useful in factory, warehouse and other commercial applications. Best to stay away from this type of fly light in residential applications.
Electrocuting fly lights are best utilized around areas where trash is stored. In the example to the right, an electrocuting "bug zapper" is placed above the dumpsters.
